Asthma

A chronic condition in which airways become inflamed.

Sufferers experience shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. Symptoms continuing even after an episode has ended. Mismanagement or lack of treatment can lead to death (Kaptein & Rabe, 2007).

At one point, it was believed to be a psychosomatic condition (the result of anxiety or stress); however, relaxation techniques had insignificant effect.

While incurable, asthma is treatable. People with asthma get along through life fine, even athletes. They simply need to stay on top of their treatment (The Western Morning News, 2017).
