Overview

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a problem where there is a hormonal imbalance in women. This is the simple definition for one of the most troublesome medical conditions that strike women. For a more complex definition, PCOS is a genetic, hormonal, metabolic and reproductive disorder that affects 10 percent of women.

There has been a rapid increase in PCOS patients," admits Dr Sapna Raina, Senior Consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at Narayana Health, Bengaluru. "Unfortunately, many of the women executives who consult me have some form of PCOS. It is a growing trend and has doubled over the past five years or so.

In addition to carrying higher risks for infertility, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, endometrial cancer and other serious conditions, PCOS often has devastating effects on women’s and girls’ quality of life and self esteem.
