About Down Syndrome (DS)

According to Marsh (2018), Down Syndrome (DS) is an easily recognizable developmental disorder that occurs as a result of “a failure of chromosomal separation during preparation of the ovum…” (Crawford & Dearmun, 2012, p. 17), which leads to the creation of an additional copy of chromosome 21 – hence the alternative name of Trisomy 21. While visual deformities are usually associated with DS, there are also some increased health risks that are associated with the syndrome, including Celiac Disease, Obesity, and most concerning of all, Early Onset Alzheimer's (EOAD).
