Plastic Surgery

The work of modern plastic surgery began roughly more than 100 years ago where Otolaryngologists, doctors that specialize in head and neck surgeries, believed in the practice of treating physical injuries that “caused patients psychological distress, social, and/or economic disadvantages (Chuang, Barnes, & Wong, 2016).”

This belief led to the beginning of facial plastic surgery as a practice of Otolaryngology. However, the idea of plastic surgery and using aesthetics was considered to be outside mainstream medicine and wasn’t accepted (Chuang, Barnes, & Wong, 2016).

It wasn’t until Jacques Joseph came into the world of plastic surgery and advocated the use of cosmetic surgery as a specialized field. During this time, Jacques Joseph was known as one of many founding fathers of modern facial plastic surgery; he developed many surgical aesthetic techniques that were later used, adopted and modified by many surgeons (Chuang, Barnes, & Wong, 2016). Overtime, new plastic surgery techniques emerged, offering many different procedures and alternatives for anyone interested in correcting any facial features or not wanting to undergo surgery.
