 What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Many people claim that they are “feeling under the weather” when they are ill or sad. However, the majority of them do not realize that they may potentially have seasonal affective disorder.

  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, specifically the late fall and winter season.
  • It can occur in the summer, but with different indicators and treatments.
  • SAD is riskier towards the younger ones than older people.
  • The disorder affects 3 to 5 percent of Canadians in which about 60-90% people are females.
  • Similar to other common illnesses, seasonal affective disorder has its symptoms, causes and treatments.
