The impact of Western Diet on immigrants

Introduction

Immigrants to Canada are considered to be healthier than those born in the country primarily because the Canadian immigration system has a process of screening by which only the healthy individuals and their families are accepted and those who do not satisfy certain health criteria usually become ineligible. This is often referred to as the “Healthy Immigrant Effect”.

However, there is a rapid decline in the health of individuals after immigration due to changes in lifestyle related to dietary and physical adjustments to the western diet. Considering the sizeable proportion of immigrant population in the country presently, and the future increase, it is very essential to study the impact of western diets on the health of immigrants.
