Autism—A Brief Intro

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that impacts individuals uniquely, with each person demonstrating distinct strengths and varying support requirements. Those diagnosed with autism may encounter challenges related to social communication and behavior, often finding certain environments and situations overwhelming. It is important to approach these individuals with understanding and to provide appropriate support to facilitate their engagement and success.

Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), encompasses a wide range of conditions that impact communication and behavior, typically becoming apparent by age 2. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), autism affects 1 in 36 children. This statistic reflects, in part, a greater ability to identify and diagnose the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder earlier in a child's development. Individuals with autism may face challenges in communication and social interaction, and they often exhibit restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. These traits can lead to difficulties in settings such as school, work, and other areas of daily life.
