Types of Bariartic Surgery
Gastric Band,(P Gray)
1.Gastric
Bypass (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass)
This procedure
reduces food intake and decreases calorie absorption by
creating a small stomach pouch and connecting it directly to the small
intestine, bypassing part of the digestive tract. Apple (n.d.) explains
that gastric bypass surgery often results in significant long-term
weight loss and helps improve metabolic conditions such as diabetes. It
is one of the most effective weight loss surgeries, with patients losing
an average of 60–80% of excess body weight within two years (Montgomery,
2016).
2.Sleeve
Gastrectomy
In this parlarge portion of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a
sleeve-shaped effectiveness and lower risk than gastric bypass.
Additionally, this procedure removes approximately 75–80% of the
stomach, leaving a tube-like structure that limits food intake. Studies
suggest that patients experience significant weight loss within the
first 12–18 months (Montgomery, 2016).
3.Adjustable
Gastric Banding
This involves placing an adjustable small pouch that restricts food intake invasive and reversible; it is typically slower and less significant weight loss compared to other procedures. According to Apple (n.d.), sleeve gastrectomy is particularly effective for patients with a BMI over 40, as it reduces the stomach’s capacity, leading to decreased appetite and improved metabolic health. That is, a silicone band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to create a smaller pouch. While it is less invasive, weight loss results are generally slower compared to other procedures (Montgomery, 2016).
