The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that drug misuse causes over 30,000 deaths annually.
Some drug addicts overdose unintentionally and pass away unexpectedly. It seems like the headlines in the newspapers about a celebrity dying from a drug overdose appear every few months.
Famous people who overdosed unintentionally have been identified as dead over the years, including musician Jimi Hendrix, comedian Chris Farley, basketball player Len Bias, and model Anna Nicole Smith.
Furthermore, a lot of these deaths might be unsightly: Hendrix, probably the best rock guitarist of his time, drowned in his vomit while under the influence of drugs (Marcovitz, H. pp. 26, 2008).
