Prevention

There are two types of preventative measures:

  1.  Preventive pharmaco-logic methods like vaccinations or
  2. Antibiotic prophylaxis, as well as non-pharmacologic therapies like behaviour modification or tick-targeted tactics.

Both categories received information, but there was not time to go over every possible or available strategy. There were two talks about prospects for vaccine development in the future and present. The function and efficacy of behaviour modification were covered in one presentation, while vector-control techniques were covered in another.

There aren't any human tick-borne illness vaccinations approved in the US at the moment.

  •  “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration licensed a vaccine for Lyme disease in 1998 and it was withdrawn from the market in 2002” (Institute of Medicine, 2011).

Examining analogous creatures in veterinary species, such cattle, can teach us a lot about human immunology, pathology, and the creation of vaccines against infections carried by ticks.

“From this research, it is known that not all tick-borne pathogens are equal” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). They are made up of a wide range of agents, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. its genomic size rises in proportion to its complexity. Most of the viral infections, for instance, have incredibly short genomes, whereas the genomes of protozoa, including Malaria, or Theileria parva, is 1,000 times larger and significantly more complicated than Babesia bovis.

As of right now, human illnesses carried by ticks can only be prevented by vaccination against viruses like flaviviruses. Viral vaccinations now in use are successful in part because the body's immune system can regulate viremia by raising IgM and IgG antibody titers. Therefore, vaccination with a dead or deactivated antiviral vaccine may cause a strong immune system response, allowing the virus to be contained swiftly in the event that either a person or an animal comes into coming into contact with it.
