Stigma and Discrimination

Stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to effective AIDS treatment and prevention. Macfarlane (2008) explains that many people living with HIV/AIDS face discrimination in healthcare, employment, and education. Stigma discourages people from getting tested or seeking treatment due to fear of judgment.

Brautigan (2011) highlights how public policy and social attitudes in various countries influence how AIDS is addressed. In some regions, government silence or misinformation contributes to social stigma. Combating this requires widespread education and inclusive healthcare policies.
