History
Dyslexia's story spans centuries, weaving its threads through accounts of individuals grappling with language barriers (Lyon, Shaywitz, & Shaywitz, 2003). Yet, formal recognition of dyslexia as a distinct learning disorder emerged only in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It has been 130 years since the term was coined b y Rudolf Berlin (University of Oxford, 2024). Berlin was a German ophthalmologist and professor. In his practice, he observes his adult patients facing difficulties in reading words. He found no issues in their vision and speculated that the problem lied within their brains, though the nature eluded him. The term he used to describe the condition, dyslexia, meant 'difficulty with words.'
