Global Impact and Awareness
HIV continues to affect populations worldwide, with sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest burden. In 2023, two-thirds of all people living with HIV resided in this region (WHO, 2024). The high infection rates and over 380,000 AIDS-related deaths annually are intensified by limited healthcare, social stigma, and inequality (UNAIDS, 2024). Despite challenges, global efforts by organizations like WHO and UNAIDS have made significant progress.
Global awareness campaigns such as World AIDS Day, held every December 1st, help reduce stigma and promote understanding of prevention and treatment. These events also honor those lost to the disease and encourage global solidarity. The 90-90-90 targets by the United Nations have been key strategies in combating HIV: 90% of people living with HIV should know their status, 90% of those diagnosed should receive ART, and 90% of those treated should achieve viral suppression (UNAIDS, 2024).
Stigma and discrimination continue to block progress in prevention and care, especially in conservative regions. Reducing stigma is essential for encouraging testing, education, and access to life-saving treatment.
