Causes of deforestation in southwestern Madagascar: what do we know?

In this article, (Sussman et al., 1996 p.301) says that between 1950 and 1985, about 1.5% of the forests in eastern Madagascar were disappearing every year. People were cutting down trees for wood, farming and making space for animals to graze. Some other reasons people were moving, some people were also selling wood as their livelihood. In the months of February, March, August, and October people used to gather fuelwood when farming was not available. (Randriamanarivo, 1997). This article talks about how people in the area use forests and compare it to using the land for farming instead. IN the last 25 years, Madagascar has been al lot of changes politically, socially, and economically. Some experts think it has been a tough time for the country from 1975 to 1993. (Gow, 1997: p. 409)
