Causes
Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Bacterial pneumonia is often from Streptococcus pneumoniae. Viruses like influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 can also lead to it. Fungal infections are less common and usually affect people with weak immune systems. Pneumonia can also happen if food, liquids, or vomit accidentally enter the lungs, called aspiration pneumonia. In hospitals, some patients get pneumonia from germs that are harder to treat.
