Diagnosis
Pneumonia is diagnosed through a combination of a physical exam and medical tests. A doctor listens to the lungs with a stethoscope to check for crackling, wheezing, or reduced breath sounds. A chest X-ray confirms if there is infection or fluid in the lungs. Blood tests can detect infection and sometimes identify the cause. A sputum test checks mucus for bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Oxygen levels are often measured using a pulse oximeter to see how well the lungs are working.
