The Effects of Plastic Suggery on the Mind

Types of Plastic Surgery Overview

Patients who undergo plastic surgery experience significant psychological effects that can differ according on the operation, the reasons for the decision, and the surgical outcome.

Positive Effects on Self Esteem

Cosmetic surgery often leads to increased confidence and self-esteem for many people. An improved sense of self-worth can result from successful surgery that addresses long-standing insecurities. For instance, it has been demonstrated that many people's body satisfaction and self-esteem are enhanced by breast augmentation or facelift procedures (Jones & Janis, 2006). Through cosmetic surgery, patients can modify their identities to suit their preferences and restore control over how they seem.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

Although cosmetic surgery can help some people, it can also make mental health problems worse for others. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is one such disorder in which sufferers obsess over perceived faults or little flaws. In an effort to "perfect" their appearance, some people may have several procedures, which can result in a vicious cycle of discontent and psychological suffering (Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2015). For instance, individuals with BDD might keep going for surgery even if the outcome is good because they don't think they've gotten well (Jones & Janis, 2006).

Social Perception and Stigma

There are still differing opinions in society regarding plastic surgery. While cosmetic surgery is still stigmatized in some cultures, it is extensively accepted and viewed as a constructive way to improve one's look in others (Hodges, 2008). Patients' mental health may be impacted by this stigma, particularly if they feel ridiculed or judged for having surgery.
