Major Causes
Kidney disease can start silently and progress over years. Major medical causes include:
- Diabetes Mellitus: High blood sugar damages kidney filters (glomeruli) over time.
- Hypertension: High blood pressure damages blood vessels in the kidneys.
- Glomerulonephritis: Inflammation often caused by infections or autoimmune conditions.
- Polycystic Kidney Disease: A genetic disorder where cysts grow in the kidneys.
- Prolonged medication use: Long-term NSAIDs or certain prescription drugs can harm the kidneys.
Medication-related Risk
Overuse of pain relievers (NSAIDs) and some herbal supplements can impair kidney function. Always follow dosing and consult a health professional.
Infections and Obstruction
Severe or repeated urinary tract infections and kidney stones that cause obstruction may lead to kidney damage.
Risk Factors
- Age (risk increases with age)
- Family history of kidney disease
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Cardiovascular disease
If you have any of the above risk factors, speak to your healthcare provider about screening for kidney disease.
