Physical activity and Wellness
The Exercise-Mental Health Link
Besides the
benefits of physical health, exercise also finds a prominent place in
the domain of mental health. According to Lenne et al. (2024), fitness
has a positive effect on cognitive health: regular physical activities
improve the work of the brain and increase memory, which delays
processes of cognitive degeneration. Sun, Wang, & Chen (2022) further
support that regular physical activities are contributing factors to
increased mental clarity and lowered symptoms of fatigue, thus proving
the link between exercise and mental well-being.
Exercise as a Stress Reduction Tool
Stress is
one of the major issues nowadays, and physical activity works as an
excellent stress reliever. According to the Journal of Exercise Science
and Fitness, 2003, the structured exercise programs reduced stress
levels, and their clarity of mind was improved. The Washington Post,
2018, it was observed that exercise has increasingly been recommended as
a key strategy in the stress management programs of various workplaces
thus explaining the importance of fitness to reduce stress.
The Role of Physical Activity against Anxiety and
Depression
Various
studies have documented the efficacy of exercises in the treatment of
anxiety and depression. In this regard, Sharifzadeh, 2013 states that
regular exercise often builds a person's mental toughness and enhances
his overall sense of well-being. Hoeger & Hoeger, 2013 conjoin that
exercises provide healthy means of dissipating stress, release endorphin
chemicals responsible for good feelings, hence alleviates anxiety and
depression symptoms.
