Another important discussion following the diagnosis includes which people are at a higher risk of getting deep vein thrombosis. Two categories can be used to categorize the several causes of Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism: acquired and inherited. More than 80% of patients have a definite clinical risk factor for thrombosis, but many factors are frequently involved in a particular patient (Judd, 2014). Extended periods of immobility, such as prolonged flights or bed rest following surgery, increase the risk of DVT. Risks associated with surgical procedures and traumatic injuries, especially those affecting the lower limbs, are increased. Increased clotting activity is associated with cancer, particularly with some forms of the disease. In addition, Obesity and smoking are lifestyle factors that increase the risk of DVT. Also, the health of blood vessels is impacted by excess body weight and the inflammatory effects of smoking. Growing older and having a genetic vulnerability, are two general risk factors.
