Between reality and expectations

Medical Risks

Plastic surgery risks are relatively less than other surgical specialties, but there is still a risk of medical complications. This includes anesthesia, bleeding, infection, scarring, nerve damage including death. Even though it is an elective procedure, it involves manipulation of the tissues and is most of the time close to vital organs in the body which heightens the risk of complications.

Patients may also suffer from emotional stress if the results don’t meet their expectations, requiring additional corrective surgeries. While medical technology has advanced a lot yet there is always a risk involved, especially with patients undergoing several procedures at a time.

Therefore, plastic surgeries should never be taken lightly, by following social trends and beauty standards, rather by making long-term health-based decisions that will outweigh the risks involved.

Cosmetic surgery procedures are profitable, and due to absence of legal restraints, they are being performed in outpatient clinics by non-plastic surgeons.

Many patients choose to travel to countries where they can perform plastic surgery for more affordable costs which is called medical tourism. Medical tourism is another factor that causes risk and complications. Risks depend on the country where the procedure will be performed and whether the patient is in good health in case they experience complications after the procedure, especially having to fly for long hours after.

Other general risks of plastic surgery are listed below:

Abnormal scarring. Blood clots.
Blood loss. Complications of anesthesia, such as respiratory issues during your procedure.
Fluid build-up (edema). Infection.
Nerve damage, leading to neuropathy.
