Barriers to Exercise in Healthcare Settings
Why Are Exercise Referrals So Rare?
Although healthcare professionals well understand the benefits of exercise, structured referral programs to patients are rare. There is a lack of formal systems and personal habits of the healthcare providers themselves as the major reason.
Deenik et al. (2022) find that exercise professionals who work with professionals less likely to be fit themselves and more likely to make patient referrals to exercise programs.
“While 80% of professionals realize the mental benefits of exercise, only few do refer patients regularly.”
